Question 1
Do I need a referral to receive treatment at Active Pelvic Health and Wellness?
Answer 1
No, you do not need a physician referral. New Mexico is a Direct Access State for physical therapy. You can schedule your initial evaluation and begin your treatment program with me immediately.
Question 2
What qualifications should my physical therapist have to treat these sensitive areas?
Answer 2
At Active Pelvic Health, our provider is a doctor of physical therapy (PT, DPT) and is residency trained and board certified as a pelvic and women's health clinical specialist (PWCS). This qualification requires completing 2,000 hours of hands on training with patients experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, completing a case study on a pelvic floor patient, and passing an exhaustive written exam to demonstrate the ability to treat pelvic floor symptoms in all ages and genders. The specialty is quite rare - there are fewer than 300 of these specialists in the United States, and only a handful in New Mexico.
The fact that you are reading this is a great start - your physical therapist is likely to be the medical professional with whom you will interact with the most. Selecting the right partner to guide your care, recommend local specialists to support your progress, and keep you informed on how to keep your pelvic floor strong and healthy is a critical decision. A therapist with the PWCS certification is your best option, regardless of gender, age, or your specific symptoms and pelvic floor dysfunction.
